4th Virtual Conference of the Possibility Studies Network

Call for papers

We are pleased to announce the upcoming 4th Virtual Conference of the Possibility Studies Network, to be held on January 20-21, 2025. We've chosen to start our conference on January 20th, often cited as the "saddest day of the year," as a deliberate act of reimagining possibilities. By engaging in vibrant intellectual exchange on this day, we aim to transform it into a day of hope, inspiration, and new beginnings.

We look forward to your contributions and to exploring the realm of possibilities together! This conference aims to explore the frontiers of what's possible, challenging conventional wisdom and imagining new futures. As it is an online edition, we particularly welcome presentations from those who would find it harder to join the in person conference in July.

Keynotes

Leyya Hoosen

Dr. Hoosen is a Socio-Cultural Digital Anthropologist, specialising in critical approaches to gender, decolonial, and religion studies. Her research explores what it means to be a “Muslim woman” in South Africa in the digital age. She considers what Muslimness and Religiosity mean, how these concepts inform our processes of identification, and how access to digital platforms allows new avenues for engaging these concepts.

Dr. Hoosen has held fellowships with the Wadsworth African Fellowship (supported by the Wenner-Gren Foundation, the leading international funder of cutting-edge research in Anthropology), Social Sciences Research Council, Re-Centring Afro-Asia Program, and Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship. As a senior Writing Fellow with the Wits Writing Centre, she infuses her pedagogy with accessible and writing-intensive learning. She works on creating and sustaining pipelines for scholars of colour within the academy and has worked with and supervised student cohorts from undergraduate through to doctoral programs across the humanities.

Karabo-Maya Sankara Rodwell

Karabo-Maya Sankara Rodwell is a PhD candidate in Socio-Cultural Anthropology at the University of the Witwatersrand looking at the loved experiences of young people in Southern Africa. One of her main areas of interest is Pan Africanism, having done her Honours research on Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe and his impact on youth pre- and post-1994. Her MA research focused on the experiences of Blackwomen in South African liberation movements, specifically the Black Consciousness Movement. She intends to stay in the academic space and make the world of academia more accessible and reflective of the society in which we live.
